Photos taken this past Fall of another young and attractive couple who are getting married this spring. I’ve worked a lot with Carrie’s family in one way or another. They are such great people with kind hearts. You can see it in her smile and the way she and Eric look at each other. Wishing them the best in their marriage and their life they will make together.

I borrowed my neighbors baby girl the other day because I bought a tutu and I needed someone to wear it! That’s right. I bought a tutu. I was perusing the Etsy website and came across the cutest tutu that I’ve ever seen. I bought the 18 month size immediately with no regard to the fact that I not only don’t have an 18 month old daughter but I have no daughter at all. And all my nieces are too old or live too far away. And besides, I don’t want to give it to anyone else. I want to keep it. I’m stingy that way. So that’s what I did. I kept it. For months and months until my neighbors’ daughter was old/big enough to wear it. Then I borrowed her so I could get the cutest photos I’ve ever taken in my life. Here’s one of them. Seriously. Tutus rule!

Young love: engagement

My friend’s sister asked me if I would be willing to be her photographer for her upcoming wedding. I’ve shot a few weddings for friends and they’ve turned out pretty well. Well, let me put it this way…I took photos at friend’s weddings and they turned out well. However, I’ve always had the added cushion of other people or another professional photographer there to catch the shots that I missed. This time, however, it looks like it’s just going to be me. I’m excited for it. I think it’s going to be a fun day and the bride- and groom-to-be are two beautiful people who are very photogenic so that will be helpful. I feel good about doing it but I won’t pretend I’m not a little nervous. I certainly want to be able to give them the best shots possible to tell the story of their big day. It’s coming up quick.

But before getting to the wedding, we had to tackle the engagement photos. Here are a few of my favorites.

Sit and smile pretty

I was taking my friends’ family photos the other week. We were at this awesome-looking stone building at Highbanks Park in Columbus. I was trying to have them sit together on the edge of the stone because I thought it might add good texture. However, getting three kids to sit and pose perfectly in unison was about like herding cats. The parents were pretty much always on and waiting for the camera. Which helps. It does. But the kids were all about doing their own things. Ends up, I pretty much like the resulting natural photos better.

I’ve been thinking a lot about trying to put myself out there to take more photos of children, families, couples, etc. Like, you know, professionally and all. I look at blog after blog after website after website. Some that I see are insanely phenomenal and they remind me to keep my day job. Others that I view…well…let’s just say they lead me to believe this is something I can do.

I have been so fortunate recently to have some friends need just the type of photos that I want to take. Three separate people, actually. I feel like this is a good testing phase to see how I do. I shot two of them yesterday and I have another in a couple weeks. So, within the next few weeks, I’ll be going through my pics to get them ready to give to my “clients.” I’ll post some here and there to give you a glimpse into my progress.

Here’s the first unofficial official new business that’s not yet a business photo. Let me know what you think.

My husband and I just got back from being in our friends’ wedding in Scottsdale. It was an awesome, long weekend and the wedding couldn’t have been more perfect for them. I smile thinking about it.

While walking around their neighborhood on day, I came across this bush with sweet little orange flowers. I must have spend 20 minutes taking different photos around it. This one is one of my favorites. The title is in honor of our friends.

…then cropped to square, used the Creamy Cyan photoshop action and added a slight texture over the top. Voila!

Free vector art 1

Lately, I have had need to create some different little pieces of art for my day job. Vector art. Also known as line art. I was in need of vector art for one thing or another and was having trouble finding what I needed so I had to create it myself. We ended up not using these and I didn’t like the thought of all that time going to waste. So I started thinking that I may as well share with the rest of the world in case anyone else finds themselves in the same search I did. Hopefull this will be useful to someone so I can feel like my time was better-spent.

WordPress would not let me upload .ai files for “security reasons” (whatever that means). The files that you can download are PDFs that can be brought into Illustrator or some other vector graphics editing program to use to your liking. Just click on the image, it will open a new window showing the PDF. You should be able to save to your computer from there. Feel free to use these three vector files as you wish.

In May of 2010, I found myself on my first tv (commercial) shoot in Charleston, West Virginia. The commercial had several different scenes around town: a gas station, a restaurant, a bowling alley, a stream, a baseball park, etc. One of the scenes was a garden center. There’s a lot of down time during these things while the crew sets everything up. So naturally, I entertained myself taking pictures of anything and everything I saw. The garden center felt like a field day for me as far as photo opportunities. Remember Field Day in elementary school? Man, I loved Field Day and looked forward to it every year. I was too shy to try out for sports when I was younger so I was especially grateful for organized events where everyone participated without standing out from the crowd. I actually did pretty well in the events too.

But I digress. Back to the garden center.

Aw, heck. Forget it. These shots a probably pretty self-explanatory. They’re flowers, for crying out loud. What more needs to be said?
